Viruses, not only the bad ones

An Approach on Viruses by The International Summer School on Natural Products (ISSNP) 2020

Viruses have been regarded as a growing danger to humanity's health, and the current COVID-19 pandemic has further reinforced this thought. However, an increasing number of reports have demonstrated that viral weaponry can also be exploited for therapeutic applications. This consideration inspired the scientific committee of the event "Viruses not only the bad ones" to organize a series of webinars that will bring us on a journey through the world of viruses. This series will provide information about SARS-CoV-2 and other threatening viruses that could be responsible for new outbreaks, but will focus on the latest achievements in the application of viral technologies for the development of innovative therapeutic approaches.

Chair: Prof. Dr. Valeria Costantino; Prof. Dr. Giorgia Oliviero; Dr. Mattia Mori; Prof. Dr. Daniele Passarella

Date: 24 July 2020

Time: 10:00 am (CEST)

Zoom ID: 892 2248 5030

Webinar Secretariat: marinedrugs.webinar@mdpi.com

The following experts will present and speak:

Dr. Laura Pandolfi

Fondazione I.R.C.C.S. Policlinico San Matteo Pavia, Italy

Laura Pandolfi obtained a Ph.D. in biology in 2016 at the University of Milano-Bicocca, investigating the effects of drug-loaded nanoparticles on the cellular behavior of proliferative diseases. In 2018, she started to work at IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo of Pavia in the research laboratory of Prof. Dr. Meloni Federica where the focus is finding new therapies (nano-based or otherwise) against respiratory diseases, in particular for patients affected by pulmonary fibrosis and chronic lung allograft rejection. In March 2020, Laura Pandolfi started to study COVID-19, analyzing the bronchoalveolar lavage of intensive care unit patients.

Program

The webinar will start at 10:00 am (CEST) and last maximum 2 hours.

Conference Chairs

Department of Pharmacy, University of Napoli Federico II, Napoli, Italy

Introduction
Bio
Valeria Costantino has been an associate professor of organic chemistry since 2004 with the Department of Pharmacy of UniNA. Her research group focuses on exploring the unique biodiversity of natural products from marine sponges and cyanobacteria as lead compounds for biotechnological applications. More recently, her group has applied their chemical knowledge to explore quorum sensing and the quorum quenching system in bacteria symbiotic with sponges with the goal to design novel leads in antibacterial drug discovery.

Introduction
Bio
Giorgia Oliviero has been an associate professor of organic chemistry since 2016 with the Department of Molecular Medicine and Medical Biotechnologies. Currently, Prof. Dr. Oliviero’s research activity is mainly focused on the synthesis of quadruplex-forming oligonucleotides and peptide nucleic acids to be used as new drugs or as innovative diagnostic tools. Prof. Dr. Oliviero has recently achieved promising results in the direct synthesis of oligonucleotide strands (BIOSENSOR) on porous silica supports (PSi).

Webinar Content

On Thursday 24 July 2020, the International Summer School Of Natural Products, MDPI, and Marine Drugs organized a webinar, entitled: “An Approach on Viruses by The International Summer School on Natural Products (ISSNP) 2020”. It was the third webinar in the series of Marine Drugs and the webinar focused on the latest achievements in the application of viral technologies for the development of innovative therapeutic approaches.

Dr. Laura Pandolfi, Department of Chemical Biology, Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, Braunschweig, Germany, held a presentation about “Virus and application of viral technologies for the development of innovative therapeutic approaches.” Dr. Laura Pandolfi obtained a Ph.D. in biology in 2016 at the University of Milano-Bicocca, investigating the effects of drug-loaded nanoparticles on the cellular behavior of proliferative diseases.

The chairs of the webinar were Prof. Dr. Valeria Costantino, Prof. Dr. Daniele Passarella, Prof. Dr. Oliviero Giorgia, and Dr. Mattia Mori.

The presentation of Dr. Laura Pandolfi was followed by a discussion and Q&A session moderated by Dr. Mattia Mori. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend.

Relevant Special Issues

Special Issues in Marine Drugs

Topical Collection "International Summer School on Natural Products: The Contribution of Young Researchers to Marine Inspired Products"
Guest Editors: Prof. Dr. Giorgia Oliviero; Prof. Dr. Valeria Costantino; Prof. Dr. Daniele Passarella

The main focus of the International Summer School on Natural Products (ISSNP) is on both established and emerging areas of research at the cutting-edge of organic chemistry inspired by natural products.

The natural world is a source of biologically active molecules and an inspiration for researchers in different fields. Natural products are bioactive compounds synthesized by terrestrial and marine plants, micro-organisms, and animals. Interdisciplinarity involves the simple combination of several points of view to solve complex problems relating to the characterization of bioactive natural compounds, their biological evaluation, and the clarification of their mechanisms of action.

Accordingly, the aim of this Special Issue of Marine Drugs is to collect new discoveries in relation to bioactive molecules from marine-inspired compounds produced by isolation, semi-synthesis, and synthesis.

The biological activity of natural extracts or synthetic analogues without a proper chemical characterization will not be considered. Review articles in the field will also be evaluated.

The editors strongly encourage young scientists to publish their innovative research in this Special Issue.

Special Issue "Marine Antiviral Agents"
Guest Editors: Prof. Dr. Nathalie Bourgougnon
Accepting submissions until 10 August 2020

Special Issue "Marine Natural Products against Coronaviruses"
Guest Editors: Prof. Dr. Orazio Taglialatela-Scafati
Accepting submissions until 28 February 2021
